SERMON NOTES

• Water baptism isn’t a religious ceremony, it’s the implementation of DIVINE ADOPTION

(Romans 8:12-17, AMP) So then, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation, but not to our flesh [our human nature, our worldliness, our sinful capacity], to live according to the [impulses of the] flesh [our nature without the Holy Spirit]—for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever. For all who are allowing themselves to be led by the Spirit of GOD are [children] of GOD. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading again to fear [of GOD’s judgment], but you have received the Spirit of adoption as [heirs] [the Spirit producing sonship] by which we [joyfully] cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies and confirms together with our spirit [assuring us] that we [believers] are children of GOD. And if [we are His] children, [then we are His] heirs also: heirs of GOD and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His spiritual blessing and inheritance], if indeed we share in His suffering so that we may also share in His glory.

IS WATER BAPTISM REALLY THAT IMPORTANT?

(Mark 16:15-16a, NLT) Then [Jesus]he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved…”

Water Baptism fulfills 3 key responsibilities of a believer:

1. IMITATION – It follows the example of Jesus

2. OBEDIENCE – It obeys the commandment of Jesus

3. OBSERVANCE – It identifies me as a member of Jesus’ Family

Water Baptism fulfills GOD’s Vision for every believer:

1. FOLLOW

(Matthew 3:13-15, NLT) Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to talk him out of it. “I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,” he said, “so why are you coming to me?”

But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that GOD requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.

2. CONNECT

(Matthew 28:19-20, NLT) Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

3. DISCOVER

(Acts 2:37-38, NLT) Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”

Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to GOD, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

4. SERVE

(Galatians 3:26-27, NLT) You are all children of GOD through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
