SERMON NOTES

1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 NKJV

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of GOD in Christ Jesus for you.

YOU’VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN

THE CONTENDERS

1.  The World

JAMES 4:1-4 NLT

What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask GOD for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.

You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of GOD?

I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of GOD.

2. The Enemy

1 PETER 5:8 NLT

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

3. The Flesh

1 PETER 4:1-4 NLT

So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of GOD. You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.

Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do.

So they slander you.

4. Invisible enemies

EPHESIANS 6:12 NLT

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world,

against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

THE CONQUERING METHODS

1. Pray

2. Fight

3. Trust

PRAYING PAST YOUR PAST

SERMON NOTES

1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 NKJV

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks;

for this is the will of GOD in Christ Jesus for you.

GOD WILL BUILD ON YOUR PAST EXPERIENCES BUT HE WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU IN YOUR PAST!

JOSHUA 1:1-2a NLT

After the death of Moses the LORD’s servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. He said, Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people…

Moses was dead — Joshua had to let go of the past

Victory will never come until you surrender EVERYTHING from your past

JOSHUA 1:3 NLT

I promise you what I promised Moses:

‘Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you!

JOSHUA 1:5 NLT

No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live.

For I will be with you as I was with Moses.

I will not fail you or abandon you.

GOD removed every obstacle – Joshua simply had to step out in faith

Life is filled with distractions that can become obstacles to you living in Victory

Prayer centers our focus, and blocks out the noise of distractions

JOSHUAH 1:10-11 NIV

So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your GOD is giving you for your own.’

I need to do a personal inventory of my life

Two ways to pray intentionally

1. Make it personal

2. Ask Jesus the right questions

PRAY — Don’t ever stop praying!

JAMES 5:16b AMP

The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer in right relationship with Jesus) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by GOD—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].

You can ask GOD why, or you can ask GOD what

STAY IN THE FIGHT!

SERMON NOTES

1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 NKJV

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of GOD in Christ Jesus for you.

JOSHUA 1:6-7 NLT

Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.

GOD isn’t setting you up for failure… He’s leading you into victory!

1:8-9 NLT

this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your GOD is with you wherever you go.

When our lives are built on anything other than Jesus we’ll feel like we’re in a constant battle

1:10-11 NIV

So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: Go through the camp and tell the people, 'Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your GOD is giving you for your own.’

Four ways to fight with faith:

1. Resist impatience

2. Reject anxiety

3. Remain focused

4. Rely on His strength

EPHESIANS 6:10-18 NLT

Be strong in the LORD and in his mighty power. Put on all of GOD's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Therefore, put on every piece of GOD's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of GOD's righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of GOD.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers…

If I fight on my own I’ll lose every time… but if I go all in, He fights for me… every time!
