Our entire lives should be full of worship.  Worship is the way we approach each aspect of our day to day lives, by submitting it to GOD and allowing His Spirit to be our Counselor and Guide.  True worship is far more expansive and powerful than what we make it out to be when we only let it exist as singing a few songs on Sunday mornings. So, then, what is true worship, and what power does it possess?

True Worship is Imitation

“Imitate GOD, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to GOD.” (Ephesians 5:1-2, NIV)

In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul writes that the church members should live their entire lives as followers and imitators of Christ.  We are to follow him not only in our beliefs, but in our words and deeds as well.  Our lives must be a direct reflection of that which we claim to believe.

Jesus himself commanded this of his disciples.  Three times in the 14th chapter of John, Jesus tells his disciples that if they love him, they will follow his commands.  In other words, we are to follow His example.  We are to reflect His nature to the broken world around us.  To devote our entire lives to this mission is to truly worship GOD.  Such worship is not only pleasing to GOD, but it is incredibly powerful and profoundly alters the worshipper.

True Worship Cannot Be Hindered

“When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him” Mark 5:6 (NKJV)

As Jesus gets out of a boat and arrives in the country of the Gadarenes, a demon possessed man runs to him and worships.  Other translations describe him as falling to his knees before Jesus.  Even with evil spirits within him, the man is still able to worship the LORD.  As Paul describes in Romans, nothing can separate us from the love of GOD, which also means nothing can hinder our true worship of Him.

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from GOD’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of GOD that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

No matter the geographical location (Jesus crossed a sea just to reach this one worshipper), the circumstance, or the condition we find ourselves in, if we truly worship and offer our lives to GOD, we will not be hindered.

True Worship Changes Us

“And when [Jesus] got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him” (mark 5:18 NKJV)

Through his act of worship, the man was cleansed by Jesus and desired nothing more than to become His disciple.  The man worshipped, and was changed through Jesus’ power.  The man who had been demon-possessed was restored to his true self designed by GOD through true worship, and the same can be done for us.  Once our eyes and hearts are opened to the power and beauty of an intimate relationship with Christ, it radically alters our lives.

True Worship Compels Us

“and he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.” (Mark 5:20 NKJV)

When the man who had been demon-possessed asked to be with Jesus as a disciple, Jesus instead called Him to share his experience with those around him.  Similarly, true worship compels us to speak up and share our faith and our lives with those around us.  In this way, we imitate Christ and spread his message of redemption with our words and deeds.

Through the man’s true worship,  Mark records that many who heard of his release and restoration marveled and came to believe in the healing and redeeming power of Christ.  One single worshipper attracted Jesus, which sparked the demise of 2,000 demons, and led to an entire community marveling at the healing power of Christ.  Imagine what an entire community of true worshippers could accomplish for the Kingdom of GOD.
