LUKE 5:4 NKJV
When [Jesus] had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
Are you willing to go to the place Jesus is Calling you? Are you willing to go DEEPER?
Amazing things are waiting for you in the depths of real intimacy with Him!
SERIES TITLE — DEEPER | Following the Call to intimacy with Jesus
WHY? There’s more to your relationship with Jesus than what you’ve already experienced
The Sons of Korah were descendants of Korah who defied Moses in the wilderness
Their ancestors separated themselves from Korah’s rebellion, so they were given portion in the Promised Land
Korah was a distant cousin of Moses
The Sons of Korah were some of David’s chief musicians and song writers
This made them his primary worship leaders
David entrusted worship leading to people who had experienced deep hurt
Out of deep hurt comes a deeply beautiful tapestry of praise and worship
PSALM 42 NLT
1-3 As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O GOD.
I thirst for GOD, the living GOD. When can I go and stand before him?
Day and night I have only tears for food (sadness, worry), while my enemies
(depression and anxiety) continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this GOD of yours?”
When we’re depressed or anxious it’s easy to lose sight of Jesus
Or to question His Presence in our lives
How do we—as believers—biblically deal with and face depression
Is it GOD’s Plan for us to live in a constant state of anxiety and/or depression?
Does the Bible address this topic?
Is going to counseling and/or therapy sinful?
If I go to a therapist does that mean I don’t trust Jesus?
How does worship impact my physical, emotional, or mental situation
A NEW NORMAL
Depression and Anxiety are enemies of our Joy
4 My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of GOD, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration!
When we’re depressed or anxious it’s easy to forget who we are in Jesus
The writers are showing how to jumpstart our Joy
When you feel the disconnection begin, return to worship
5-6 Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in GOD! I will praise him again—my Savior and my GOD! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you—even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar.
The writers of this Psalm ask these questions three different times in the song
Is it possible they recognized that depression attacks us in the three aspects of who we are? (Spiritual, emotional, relational)
Our body – Stress makes our body think we’re being attacked by a poison, so our body reacts
(Chemical Depression requires medicine)
Our soul – Depressive or anxious thoughts reshape our character (mind, thoughts, ideas, vision)
(Emotional Depression requires clinical therapy and/or counseling)
Our spirit – We believe the lies of our depression and we shut ourselves off from our relationship with GOD, and His people
(Spiritual Depression requires Divine Wisdom, pastoral guidance, and biblical community)
If depression or anxiety are attacking your body… face your enemies GOD’s way
1. Put your hope in GOD… not your situation
2. Praise Him again… because He’s your Savior, and worship Him again… because He’s your GOD
3. Remember Him… no matter how far away from Him you feel
7-8 I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to GOD who gives me life.
When you’re overwhelmed by depression and anxiety it’s easy to feel like you’re downing
But, remember that Flood belongs to GOD, not your enemy!
Jesus wants to take you to a DEEPER place in Him,
where depression and anxiety are washed away by His Spirit
Depression hits the hardest at night… in the dark of our situation
1. Worship Him with songs He writes for you
2. Pray to GOD and He’ll give you Life
9-10 “O GOD my rock,” I cry, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies (depression and anxiety)?” Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this GOD of yours?”
Your enemy wants you to believe that GOD has abandoned you
This lie hurts you to the core of who you are (words are like hammers that break our bones)
Jesus will never abandon you!
11 Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in GOD! I will praise him again—my Savior and my GOD!
Don’t be discouraged… Jesus will never abandon you!
Put your hope in Jesus… He will never fail you!
Worship Him again… He Is your Savior!
PSALM 43 NLT
Declare me innocent, O GOD! Defend me against these ungodly people. Rescue me from these unjust liars (depression and anxiety).
Depression tells you you’re guilty…
Jesus’ blood covers your guilt and makes you innocent!
Depression attacks you through the words of other people…
Jesus is your Banner of Victory… He’s your Defender!
Anxiety robs you of your joy and locks you in a prison…
Jesus set you free… so you’re free indeed!
When depression and anxiety attack you, run to your GOD!
Worship invites His Light and Truth to guide
and lead you to a DEEPER place of intimacy with Jesus
2-3 For you are GOD, my only safe haven. Why have you tossed me aside? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressedby my enemies (depression and anxiety)? Send out your light (Divine Clarity) and your truth (Divine Reality); let them (Your Light and Truth) guide me. Let them (Your Light and Truth) lead me to your holy mountain (place of rest higher than my pain), to the place where you live.
When depression and anxiety convince you that you’ve been tossed aside, Jesus sends His Light
His Light is Divine Clarity so that you can clearly see that He’s walking beside you
When depression and anxiety oppress every part of your life, Jesus send His Truth
His Truth is Divine Reality so that you can understand that what you’re feeling is only an attack
Worship connects you with the Source of all your Joy
4-5 There I will go to the altar of GOD (worship – begin with repentance, continue into adoration), to GOD—the sourceof all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O GOD, my GOD!
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in GOD! I will praise him again—my Savior and my GOD!
When you feel discouraged…
Put your hope in Jesus!
When you feel sad…
Worship Him again!
