Believing in Jesus is so much more than simply calling ourselves “Christian”…

Our actions, responses, words, relationships, life-goals and confidence all work together to expose our true faith.

TESTED FAITH

PS OLGA | 7/9/2017

SERMON NOTES

(James 2:14, Translation) What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?

TESTED FAITH

UNTESTED FAITH says my trials mean that GOD’s MAD at me or He doesn’t EXIST

TESTED FAITH says my trials are an opportunity for me to GROW so I’m going to ENDURE

(James 1:2-4, NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Don’t ask GOD to handle something you want to handle yourself

Three areas of my life where I need Tested Faith:

1. Faith in TRIALS

2. Faith in CHOICES

3. Faith in TEMPTATIONS

APPLICATION

• My faith is exposed by my RESPONSE to trials and struggles

Scar tissue is the foundation of experience.”

STITCHES = EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENCE is where my FAITH grows!

(Psalm 119:71, NLT) My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.

(Psalm 119:143, NLT) As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands.

(James 1:17-18, NLT) Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from GOD our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.

NEXT Step:

Thank Jesus for every TRIAL or STRUGGLE I face this week, and celebrate my STITCHES

UNDISCRIMINATING FAITH

PS MONTE | 7/16/2017

SERMON NOTES

(James 2:14, NLT) What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?

UNDISCRIMINATING FAITH

Share This:

Action is the breath of true faith

(James 1:26-27, NLT)  If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your [faith] is worthless. Pure and genuine [faith] in the sight of GOD means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

  • DISCRIMINATING FAITH says our differences make me WEAKER
  • UNDISCRIMINATING FAITH says our differences are an OPPORTUNITY for me to LOVE you

Four areas of my life where I need to develop Undiscriminating Faith:

  1. Faith in my EMOTIONS

(James 1:19-20, NLT) …be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness GOD desires.

  1. Faith in my DIFFERENCES

(James 2:1, NLT) My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious LORD Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?

  1. Faith in my LIFESTYLE

(James 2:14, NLT) What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?

  1. Faith in my THEOLOGY

(James 2:24, NLT) We are shown to be right with GOD by what we do, not by faith alone.

APPLICATION

  • My faith is exposed by my WORDS, and how I treat OTHER PEOPLE

Share This:

My words determine my relationships

(Proverbs 20:3, NLT) Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling.

Two ways to change the Source of your words:

  1. Spend time with JESUS
  2. Spend time with OTHER BELIEVERS

NEXT Step:

Spend time with someone this week who is DIFFERENT than me, and LOVE them anyway

LOVE PEOPLE

Rather than choosing a side, stand firm in the middle and love the marginalized to Jesus

PURPOSED FAITH

PS MONTE | 7/23/2017

SERMON NOTES

(James 2:14, NLT) What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?

PURPOSED FAITH

Do my dreams have an Eternal Perspective, or are they focused the here and now?

UNPURPOSED FAITH says I need to chase my DREAM to find happiness

PURPOSED FAITH says if I chase after Jesus, He’ll give me a DREAM that’s BIGGER than mine

I develop PURPOSED FAITH when I develop HUMILITY

Humility is the elevator of the GODly

(James 3:13, NLT) If you are wise and understand GOD’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.

• When my dreams have no Eternal Perspective my dreams are SELF-AMBITION

(James 3:14-16, NLT) If… there is selfish ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying. For jealousy and selfishness are not GOD’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.

Three areas of my life where I need to develop Purposed Faith:

1. Faith in CHARACTER

(James 3:18, NLT) Those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

2. Faith in PASSION

(James 4:5b, NLT) GOD is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.

3. Faith in HUMILITY

(James 4:6, NLT) [GOD] gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “GOD opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

APPLICATION

• My faith is exposed by my LIFE-GOALS and the PURPOSE I choose to follow

Obedience isn’t always convenient, but it’s always the best choice

(James 4:7-10, NLT) So humble yourselves before GOD. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to GOD, and GOD will come close to you. Wash your hands… purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between GOD and the world… Humble yourselves before the LORD, and he will lift you up in honor.

When I humble myself to the PURPOSE Jesus designed for me, He will lift me up HIGHER than I ever could on my own

NEXT Step:

Evaluate my LIFE-GOALS against GOD’S PURPOSE for my life, then make the choice to SURRENDER to His PLAN

DISCOVER Who Jesus is, who I am without Him, and who He designed me to be

NEVER SETTLE

Don’t just settle for simply reaching my dreams… live every day to fulfill the Purpose Jesus designed for me

CONFIDENT FAITH

PS MONTE | 7/30/2017

SERMON NOTES

(James 2:14, NLT) What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?

CONFIDENT FAITH

TIMID FAITH says I need a BACK-UP PLAN

CONFIDENT FAITH says I can RELAX because I’m following HIS PLAN

(James 4:14-15, NLT) How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the LORD wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

Four areas of my life where I need to develop Confident Faith:

1. Faith in the FUTURE

(James 4:17, NLT) Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

2. Faith in FINANCES

(Psalm 119:127, NLT) Truly, I love your commands more than gold, even the finest gold.

3. Faith in PATIENCE

(James 5:7, NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the LORD’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen.

4. Faith in PRAYER

(James 5:13-16, NLT) Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the LORD. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the LORD will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.

Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

APPLICATION

• My faith is exposed by where I’ve INVESTED my CONFIDENCE

Share this:

Self-confidence is the lie we believe when our faith in Jesus is diminished

(Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT) Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understandingSeek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
