CONFESSION

PS MONTE | 3/5/2017

SERMON NOTES

(Psalm 18:20-24, MSG) GOD made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start.

Now I’m alert to GOD ways; I don’t take GOD for granted. Every day I review the ways he works; I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together, and I’m watching my step.

GOD rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.

• Repentance begins with CONFESSION

CONFESSION

(Psalm 51:1, NLT) Have mercy on me, O GOD, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.

• David focuses on the reality of GOD’s MERCY and COMPASSION

(Psalm 51:2, NLT) Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.

• David develops a desire for PURITY

(Philippians 4:8, NLT) Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

ALL ACCESS

When I CONFESS my sins, Jesus is more than willing to FORGIVE me, and CLEANSE me

(1 John 1:8-9, NKJV) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Three ways to access the power of confession:

1. Acknowledge that I’m a SINNER

(Psalm 51:2, NLT) Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.

2. Acknowledge that I need a SAVIOR

3. Acknowledge that I need ACCOUNTABILITY

• It’s only through CONFESSION that I have access to the forgiveness Jesus has already provided

NEXT Step:

CONFESS my struggles with another believer and make myself ACCOUNTABLE to them for healing

THE WEIGHT OF SIN

SERMON NOTES

(Psalm 18:20-24, MSG) GOD made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start.

Now I’m alert to GOD ways; I don’t take GOD for granted. Every day I review the ways he works; I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together, and I’m watching my step.

GOD rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.

• Repentance begins with CONFESSION and continues in REJECTION of my sin

REJECTION

• Sin will always have power over me until I REJECT it

(Psalm 51:3, NLT) I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night.

• David didn’t try to JUSTIFY his SIN

(Psalm 51:4-5, NLT) Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.

• David recognized that his sins were first and foremost against GOD

(Psalm 51:6, NLT) For I was born a sinner—yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there.

• David ADMITTED that he was a SINNER

(Romans 6:23, NLT) For the wages of sin is death…

LOSING WEIGHT

(Hebrews 12:1-2, NLT) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race GOD has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.

JESUS promised to CARRY the weight for me

(Matthew 11:28-30, NLT) Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Four ways to lose the weight of sin in my life:

1. Don’t run ALONE

2. Let go of my DISTRACTIONS

3. Identify my WEAKEST LINK

4. Don’t ever GIVE UP

NEXT Step:

Pray PSALM 51 every morning, then thank Jesus for CARRYING all my SINS

• Repentance begins with CONFESSION, is followed by REJECTION of my sin,

and then my DESIRES begin to change

THE PURSUIT

• I PURSUE what FULFILLS me

(Psalm 51:7-9, NLT) Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me—now let me rejoice. Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt.

• Repentance changes my mind about what I DESIRE

DESIRING PURITY

(Psalm 51:10-12, NLT) Create in me a clean heart, O GOD. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation make me willing to obey you.

• Repentance cleanses me from the IMPURITY OF SIN

• Repentance renews my SPIRIT by making me LOYAL to Jesus rather than my FLESH

• Repentance allows me to desire INTIMACY WITH JESUS more than SELF-FULFILLMENT

• Repentance restores in me the joy of receiving SALVATION

• Repentance gives me the desire to OBEY JESUS

CHOOSING PURITY

(1 John 3:2-3, NKJV) Beloved, now we are children of GOD; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in [Jesus] purifies himself, just as [Jesus] is pure.

• My RELATIONSHIP with Jesus PURIFIES me day-by-day!

NEXT Step:

FAST one day this week, and ask Jesus to REMOVE THE DESIRE of sin from my heart

THE JOY OF FORGIVENESS

GOD rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes.

• Repentance is completed when I ACCEPT the CHARACTER OF GOD into my life

ACCEPTING THE CHARACTER OF GOD

(Psalm 51:13, NLT) I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.

• David accepted the RESPONSIBILITY that came with FORGIVENESS

(Psalm 51:14-15, NLT) Forgive me for shedding blood, O GOD who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. Unseal my lips, O LORD, that my mouth may praise you.

• David acknowledged his SIN, then he WORSHIPPED GOD JOYFULLY

(Psalm 51:16-17, NLT) You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O GOD.

• David offered GOD what GOD DESIRED most, not his own PREFERENCE or COMFORT

Four characteristics Jesus values in His followers:

1. Genuine REPENTANCE

2. Heartfelt CONTRITION

3. Confession of my REBELLION

4. A desire for a FRESH START

THE POWER OF BELIEVING

(Acts 2:38-39a, NLT) “Listen! We are here to proclaim that through this man Jesus there is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in him is made right in GOD’s sight!”

• When I BELIEVE in Jesus I am made RIGHT with GOD

Take-Away:

I’ll find real joy in my life when I receive forgiveness from my sins

NEXT Step:

Share my FORGIVENESS STORY with another person, and encourage them to REPENT

and find their own FRESH START
