This time of year we hear a lot about generosity. But, what does it really mean to be generous?

Is generosity something we donate, or could it be something more?

(JOHN 3:16a, NLT) “This is how GOD loved the world: He gave…”

Generosity is one of the primary Characteristics of GOD

The challenge of generosity is to live with an open hand

When I live with an open hand I live under an open Heaven

The secret to being generous is realizing that Jesus is my Provider

(PSALM 23:1a, NLT) The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need…

(PHILIPPIANS 3:17-20a, NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example. For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven

The way I live my life reveals who I belong to

Three choices I have to make to live with an open hand:

  1. Always be joyful

(PHILIPPIANS 4:4-5, NLT) Always be full of joy in the LORD. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the LORD is coming soon.

  1. Refuse to worry

(PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7, NLT) Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell GOD what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience GOD’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

  1. Stop listening to myself

(PHILIPPIANS 4:8-9, NLT) Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the GOD of peace will be with you.

(PHILIPPIANS 4:11b-12, NLT) I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.

(PHILIPPIANS 4:13, NLT) I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

The Secret is to learn to depend on Jesus… for everything

Jesus wants me to depend on Him rather than myself

(PHILIPPIANS 4:19, NLT) And this same GOD who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

NEXT Step:

Ask Jesus to give me an opportunity this week to live with an open hand, then follow His lead

(JOHN 3:16a, NLT) “This is how GOD loved the world: He gave…”

The challenge of generosity is to live with an open hand

When I live with an open hand I live under an open Heaven

Generosity isn’t a money issue… it’s a heart issue

What do I treasure?

(MATTHEW 6:19-21, ESV) “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

How does Jesus gain access to my heart?

(MALACHI 3:10a, NLT) “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple.”

The first 10th of my increase

The house where I’ve chosen to worship GOD, and the house where He’s chosen to place His name

Tithing is how GOD uses the church to meet the needs of others

(MALACHI 3:10b, NLT) “If you [bring all the tithes into the storehouse],” says the LORD, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in!”

GOD opens the windows of Heaven specifically for me

How do I know tithing will work?

(MALACHI 3:10c, NLT) “Try it! Put me to the test!

Tithing conditions my heart for generosity

NEXT Step:

Connect with another believer this week who tithes, and ask them to share their story with me… Then ask Jesus to lead me to my own story of trusting Him

(JOHN 3:16a, NKJV) “For GOD so loved the world He gave…”

Why does Jesus want me to generous?

(GENESIS 12:2, NKJV) “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.”

I will make you a great nation…”

I will bless you…”

I will make your name great…”

“…you shall be a blessing.”

Jesus wants to use my generosity to bring healing to my world

NEXT Step:

Connect with another believer this week who is actively serving, ask them to share their story with me, then ask Jesus to connect me with someone in need so that I can serve them
