Have you ever wondered, “What does the Bible say about ___________?”

We all make choices every day that impact ourselves and everyone else around us.
The real question is, are we living in His best for us,
or are we living in the Gray Areas?

THE HEART OF CONVICTIONS

PS MONTE | 7/8/2018

SERMON NOTES

PHILIPPIANS 2:12-13 NKJV “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is GOD who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”

HOW DO I WORK OUT MY OWN SALVATION?

Maintaining your salvation is a personal responsibility that’s defined by your choices

“But, I like __________, and doesn’t Jesus want me to be happy?”

PROVERBS 14:12 NLT “There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death”

GOD gives us the choice to choose relationship or separation

The more we trust His Character, the deeper our relationship with Him grows

JAMES 4:8a NLT “Come close to GOD, and GOD will come close to you!”

CONVICTIONS SHARPEN MY FOCUS

PROVERBS 27:17 NLT “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”

Jesus is the Friend who sticks closer than a brother

Convictions aren’t bondage… they’re real Freedom!

ROMANS 8:31, 33a NLT “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If GOD is for us, who can ever be against us?”

Who dares accuse us whom GOD has chosen for his own?

No one—for GOD himself has given us right standing with himself.

Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us…!

Choose relationship… choose convictions… reject condemnation!

ROMANS 8:38-39 NLT “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from GOD’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrowindeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of GOD that is revealed in Christ Jesus our LORD.”

GROWING CONVICTIONS

SERMON NOTES

CONVICTIONS BUILD OUR

SPIRIT, SOUL & BODY

GALATIANS 5:1 NLT

So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

GALATIANS 5:16-18 NLT

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants.

And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.

These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

CONVICTION VS TRADITION

GOD doesn’t want rules to create boundaries,

but to grow a LOVE for Him that leads us towards Him

MATTHEW 22:37 NLT

Jesus replied, “You must love the LORD your GOD with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind…”

THERE IS A BIBLICAL PATTERN

FOR PERSONAL CONVICTIONS

GALATIANS 5:1 NLT

So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

GALATIANS 5:13 NLT

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters.

But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

ROMANS 12:1-2 NKJV

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of GOD,

that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to GOD, which is your reasonable service.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,

that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of GOD.

PSALM 32:1-2 NLT

Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

How do you begin to measure your own convictions so you can grow?

1. Intentionally Seek GOD

2 CHRONICLES 7:14 NLT

Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray

and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

2. Develop Self-awareness

1 CORINTHIANS 14:33 NLT

For GOD is not a GOD of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of GOD’s holy people.

3. Say goodbye to fear

2 TIMOTHY 1:7 NLT

For GOD has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

1 JOHN 4:18 NLT

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment,

and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.

4. Live Spirit-led

GALTIANS 5:22-26 NLT

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience,

kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

THE PROTECTION OF CONVICTION

SERMON NOTES

PHILIPPIANS 2:12-13 NKJV

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is GOD who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

ROMANS 7:21-23 NLT

I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love GOD's law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.

Paul isn’t talking about people who are lost

ROMANS 7:24 NLT

Oh, what a miserable person I am!

Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?

Notice his words: free… dominated… sin… death

ROMANS 7:25 NLT

Thank GOD! The answer is in Jesus Christ our LORD.

So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey GOD's law,

but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

1 CORINTHIANS 6:12 KJV

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me,

but I will not be brought under the power of any.

I can do whatever I want, but what does it benefit, and is it necessary?

ROMANS 14:20-23 NLT

Don’t tear apart the work of GOD over what you eat. Remember, all foods are acceptable, but it is wrong to eat something if it makes another person stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble.

You may believe there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and GOD. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right. But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.

ROMANS 8:5-8 NLT

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to GOD. It never did obey GOD'S laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please GOD.

Convictions are a shield that protect me

The Holy Spirit leads me to establish personal convictions in the Gray Areas

ROMANS 8:1-3a NKJV

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do… GOD did!

CONVICTION TOOLS

PS MONTE | 7/29/2018

SERMON NOTES

PHILIPPIANS 2:12-13 NKJV

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is GOD who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

HOW DO MY PERSONAL CONVICTIONS FIT INTO THE BIGGER PICTURE?

My personal convictions matter because I’m connecting others to GOD

ROMANS 14:13

NLT Let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall. My lack of personal convictions can be a hindrance to other believers

ROMANS 14:14-16 NLT

I know and am convinced on the authority of the LORD Jesus that no food, in and of itself, is wrong to eat. But if someone believes it is wrong, then for that person it is wrong. And if another believer is distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you eat it.vDon’t let your eating ruin someone for whom Christ died. Then you will not be criticized for doing something you believe is good.

If I prefer myself over others, then my life is drifting away from Jesus

ROMANS 14:17-19 NLT

For the Kingdom of GOD is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please GOD, and others will approve of you, too. So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

If I live my life without convictions, then my effectiveness in other’s lives is diminished

ROMANS 15:1-3a NLT

We who are strong must be considerate of those who are [weak]. We must not just please ourselves. We should help others do what is right and build them up in the LORD. For even Christ didn’t live to please himself.

Every believer is called to be a disciple-maker

2 CORINTHIANS 10:3-5 NKJV

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in GOD for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of GOD, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Three Conviction Tools that strengthen my Core:

1. Commitment to Scripture as my Authority

2. Construction of specific beliefs and convictions based on the Authority of GOD’s Word

3. Courage to act on my convictions in faith

These tools shape me into an effective disciple-maker

1. I’m committed to following Scripture… even in the Gray Areas

2. I’m constructing convictions that are guided by Scriptural principles… even if I can’t find a Text

3. I’m courageous in living my faith out loud, and leading people to Christ!
