WATER BAPTISM

PS MONTE | 4/8/2018

SERMON NOTES

2 PETER 1:1-2 NLT This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our GOD and Savior.

May GOD give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of GOD, Jesus our LORD.

When you receive Salvation your direction will radically shift. If it doesn't, you didn't receive Salvation

WHY?

Because receiving salvation isn't everything Jesus has for us, it's only the beginning

DO I NEED TO BE WATER BAPTIZED?

1 PETER 3:21 AMP Corresponding to that [rescue through the flood], baptism [which is an expression of a believer's new life in Christ] now saves you, not by removing dirt from the body, but by an appeal to GOD for a good (clear) conscience, [demonstrating what you believe to be yours] through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

1 PETER 3:21 NKJV There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward GOD), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

WATER BAPTISM IDENTIFIES YOU WITH SALVATION

GALATIANS 3:26-27 NLT For you are all children of GOD through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.

WHAT IF I'VE ALREADY BEEN BAPTIZED?

ACTS 19:3-5 NLT "What baptism did you experience?" [Paul] asked. And they replied, "The baptism of John." Paul said, "John's baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus." As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the LORD Jesus.

BIBLICAL WATER BAPTISM ALWAYS FOLLOWS THE ACT OF BELIEVING

WHAT DOES BAPTISM MEAN IN MY LIFE?

Water baptism removes the barriers that hinder me from receiving everything that GOD has for me

ACTS 2:38 NLT Peter replied, "Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to GOD, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Salvation begins when I turn to GOD

I'm baptized into Jesus to publicly be identified as His

True forgiveness completely eradicates the stain of sin

NEXT STEP

MATTHEW 3:15 AMP Jesus replied to him, "Permit it just now; for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness."

Water baptism washes away your sins, and brings you into right standing with GOD

Water baptism ushers you into a vibrant, daily relationship with Jesus

2 PETER 1:1-2 NLT This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our GOD and Savior.

May GOD give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of GOD, Jesus our LORD.

When you receive Salvation your direction will radically shift. If it doesn't, you didn't receive Salvation

HOW DO I GROW MY FAITH?

2 PETER 1:3-8 NLT By his divine power, GOD has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world's corruption caused by human desires.

In view of all this, MAKE EVERY EFFORT to respond to GOD'S promises. SUPPLEMENT YOUR FAITH with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.

The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our LORD Jesus Christ.

Moral Excellence
A Changed Life: Don't live the way you did before you accepted Jesus

Knowledge
Intimacy with Jesus: Not information or opinions, but rather personal connection with Jesus

Self-Control
Personal Discipline: Intentionally living above your desires and weaknesses

Patient Endurance
GODly Strength: Not caving at opposition, not giving in to depression or anxiety, not walking away because you're tired

GODliness
Christ-Imitation: Pattern your life after Jesus, not after society

Brotherly Affection
GODly Relationships: Live in community with other believers

Love for Everyone
Vulnerable Compassion: See people the way Jesus does.. as people who need a Savior

HOW DO I MAKE DISCIPLES?

MATTHEW 28:19-20 NLT Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations.. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.

JESUS NEVER INTENDED MY FAITH TO BE PERSONAL AND PRIVATE

When you received Salvation, you're entrusted with a call to go make disciples

As I receive Truth I have responsibility absorb and disperse what I've received

2 TIMOTHY 2:15 AMP Study and do your best to present yourself to GOD approved, a workman [tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully teaching the word of truth.

Personal Discipleship Track:

1. Put in the work

2. Be intentional

3. Share what you've learned

NEXT STEP

WHY AM I SAVED?
TO LOVE PEOPLE

PSALM 96:3 NLT Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.

Receiving GOD's Love personally overflows into my love for other people

HOW DO I START THE PROCESS?
FIND FREEDOM - Discover Your Design

SERMON NOTES
2 PETER 1:1-2 NLT
This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ,
our GOD and Savior.
May GOD give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of GOD, Jesus our LORD.

DO I NEED THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?
MATTHEW 3:11 NLT
"I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to GOD. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."
But I thought Salvation was all I need
ACTS 19:1-2 NLT
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" he asked them.
“No," they replied, "we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
Just because you haven’t heard the NEXT that Jesus has for you,
doesn't mean you’ve received all there is
WHEN I HEAR TRUTH I HAVE THE CHOICE TO RESPOND
When I respond, GOD always confirms His Word
ACTS 19:5-6 NLT
As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the LORD Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.

[NEXT STEP]
Is there more beyond receiving Salvation?
NEVER SETTLE
ACTS 1:8 NLT
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Where do I start?

1. Receive the Gift
ACTS 2:38 NLT
Peter replied, "Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to GOD, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christfor the forgiveness of your sins. THEN you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
2. Start using your Gift
2 TIMOTHY 1:6-7 NKJV
…Stir up the gift of GOD which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For GOD has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING WITH MY SALVATION?

1 PETER 4:10-11 NLT GOD has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though GOD himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that GOD supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to GOD through Jesus Christ.

I go to church and I believe in Jesus.. isn't that enough?

ROMANS 12:3-13 NLT Because of the privilege and authority GOD has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don't think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith GOD has given us. Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ's body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

In his grace, GOD has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if GOD has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as GOD has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If GOD has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

Don't just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the LORD enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When GOD's people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

If your faith is limited to what you receive and experience, then your faith isn't in Jesus

Be creative in serving

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS COMPELS ME OUT OF MYSELF INTO EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS

MATTHEW 10:7-8 NLT Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!

NEXT STEP

HAVE FUN
JOHN 10:10 NKJV The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Living for Jesus and serving others doesn't rob your life.. it fulfills your life

Living for anything else other than your GOD-Design results in dissatisfaction

Jesus never intended that we live, serve or grow alone..
