Have you ever wanted to know how to pray? Is this something we can learn from a book, or through imitation of someone else?

The answer is yes, to both questions. The Bible—GOD’s Word—teaches us everything we could ever want to learn about prayer, and Jesus demonstrated how we should pray every day.

THE JESUS PLAN

(James 5:16, NLT) The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

(1 John 5:14-15, NIV) This is the confidence we have in approaching GOD: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

PRAY LIKE THIS

Jesus gave us the perfect pattern to COMMUNICATE with GOD

(Matthew 6:7-13, NLT) “When you pray, don’t babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.”

Follow Jesus’ EXAMPLE not a RITUAL

Seven aspects of highly effective prayer:

1. It begins with TRUST

2. Connect with Him RELATIONALLY

3. Apply His NAME

4. Pray His AGENDA first

5. Trust Him to provide what you NEED not just what you WANT

6. FORGIVE others so that you can receive His FORGIVENESS

7. Seek the PROTECTION of His CHARACTER

MAKING THE CONNECTION

(Hebrews 11:6, NIV) And without faith it is impossible to please GOD, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

I need to ask myself these three questions:

1. Am I willing to PERSONALLY ENGAGE in the relationship?

2. Am I willing to SURRENDER my agenda for His?

3. Am I willing to TRUST that He’s listening?

FRESH START

(Jeremiah 29:12-13, NLT) “In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

Next Step: Follow His EXAMPLE and receive His CHARACTER

“You may not believe that Jesus is even listening to your prayers… so you don’t pray. But, He’s already promised that He listens and responds to you when you sincerely reach for Him!”

ACTS 4 PRAYERS

(James 5:16b, NLT) The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

THE PROBLEM

• Living in relationship with Jesus is COUNTER-CULTURAL

• Believers aren’t called to conform to culture… we’re called to establish HIS KINGDOM

THE PRAYER

(Acts 4:23-31, NLT) As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said. When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to GOD: “O Sovereign LORD, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the LORD and against his Messiah.’

“In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed. But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will. And now, O LORD, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your Word. Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

Four critical elements of Acts 4 Prayers:

1. Declare His SOVEREIGNTY

2. Remind myself what He’s already done in SCRIPTURE

3. Remind myself what He’s already done in my EXPERIENCE

4. Surrender to His AGENDA

THE RESULT

(Acts 4:31, NLT) After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the Word of GOD with boldness.

Three undeniable results of Acts 4 Prayers:

1. GOD RESPONDS

2. GOD EQUIPS

3. Believers PREACH

FRESH START

• The key ingredient in Acts 4 Prayers is CONFIDENCE

(1 John 5:14-15, NIV) This is the confidence we have in approaching GOD: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Next Step: Remember WHO HE IS, then remember what He’s ALREADY DONE

“There are four crucial elements of Acts 4 prayers: 1) Declare His Sovereignty; 2) Remind yourself what He’s already done in Scripture; 3) Remind yourself what He’s already done in your experience; 4) Surrender to His Agenda.”

PRAYING LIKE JABEZ

(James 5:16b, NLT) The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

(1 John 5:14-15, NIV) This is the confidence we have in approaching GOD: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

IDENTITY BIRTHED IN PAIN

(1 Chronicles 4:9, NKJV) Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”

• Jabez’ NAME identified him with his BIRTH

• My identity tells my PAST, establishes my PRESENT and seals my FUTURE

• Jabez lived beyond his IDENTIFICATION

PRAYER ELEVATES US BEYOND OUR IDENTITY

(1 Chronicles 4:10, NKJV) Jabez called on the GOD of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So GOD granted him what he requested.

Five lessons from Jabez’ prayer:

1. Jabez went to GOD, not OTHERS

2. Jabez asked GOD to BLESS-HIM and increase his TERRITORY

3. Jabez surrendered his life to GOD’s GUIDANCE

4. Jabez asked for GOD’s PROTECTION

5. Jabez asked GOD to change his IDENTITY

FRESH START

(Job 19:25-27, NLT) As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see GODI will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!

Next Steps: Surrender your life to GOD-REALITY and rise above your PAST-IDENTITY

“Even though Jabez didn’t choose his name he refused to live painfully. Instead, he chose to live honorably…he lived beyond his identification!”

PRAY FIRST

(1 John 5:14-15, NIV) This is the confidence we have in approaching GOD: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

WHY WAIT TO PRAY?

(Psalm 63:1, NKJV) O GOD, You are my GOD; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.

• Prayer should be our FIRST RESPONSE not our LAST RESORT

Three ways to grow a healthy relationship with GOD through prayer:

1. REPENT and change my CHARACTER

2. REPENT and change my ACTIONS

3. REALIZE that outside of Him there is no SATISFACTION

WHY NOT PRAY FIRST?

Three lies my human nature tells me about prayer:

1. Prayer is a RITUAL therefore optional

(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT) Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is GOD’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

2. GOD already KNOWS my need, so why PRAY?

(Matthew 6:33, MSG) Steep your life in GOD-Reality, GOD-Initiative, GOD-Provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

3. PRAYER is what I do when I’ve tried EVERYTHING ELSE

(Psalm 16:2, MSG) I say to GOD, “Be my LORD! Without You, nothing makes sense.”

(Philippians 4:6-7, NLT) Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everythingTell GOD what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience GOD’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

• Praying first goes beyond anything I can UNDERSTAND

Two GOD-Realities that come from praying first:

1. Praying first protects my CHARACTER

2. Praying first protects my BELIEFS

FRESH START

(James 5:16b, NLT) The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

Next Steps: Pray FIRST, then pray AGAIN, and don’t ever stop PRAYING

“Prayer should be our first response not our last resort! But, we have to realize that this only happens when we’re in a healthy relationship with Him.

“If you don’t really know Him, you can’t or won’t trust Him.”
