Simply examining the way we look at our relationships:

love, friends and family, and faith.

IN LOVE… I THINK

(Ephesians 4:2-3, NLT) Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

GOD-DESIGNED TO LAST

(Genesis 2:23-24, NLT) “At last!” the man exclaimed. “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’”

This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

Society’s view of romance has created a tension:

  • Being in love with THE IDEA OF INTIMACY vs Truly experiencing JESUS’ DESIGN FOR INTIMACY

KEEPING LOVE SIMPLE

(Ephesians 5:21, NLT) Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

The Simple Plan for Romance:

  • SUBMIT to EACH OTHER

(Ephesians 5:22-24, NLT) For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the LORD. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.

The Simple Plan for Wives:

  • WIVES should submit to their HUSBANDS in everything

(Ephesians 5:25-26, NLT) For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of GOD’s Word.

The Simple Plan for Husbands:

  • HUSBANDS should LOVE their wives
  • HUSBANDS should GIVE UP THEIR LIVES for their wives

NEXT Step: Look to JESUS as the pattern for my ROMANTIC relationships

“Society’s view of romance has created a tension that we must address: Being in love with the idea of intimacy vs Truly experiencing Jesus’ design for intimacy.”

YOU CAN PICK YOUR FRIENDS, BUT YOU CAN’T PICK YOUR FAMILY

(Ephesians 4:2-3, NLT) Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

STRONG FAMILY

(Psalm 127:1, NLT) Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted.

  • A strong family is built firmly on the Foundation of JESUS and HIS WORD

3 characteristics of a weak family:

  1. SELF-CENTERED
  2. SELF-FULFILLED
  3. SELF-CONTAINED

7 ways to build a strong family:

  1. Make JESUS the center of my family
  2. PRAY together as a family
  3. Develop a GODLY VISION for my family
  4. SERVE others as a family
  5. Make the choice to have a DRAMA-FREE home
  6. Put Jesus first in my TIME, TALENT and TREASURE
  7. Open up my family to ACCEPT others

EXTENDED FAMILY

  • Friends are PRECIOUS COMMODITIES, but close friends are PRICELESS

(Psalm 18:24, NLT) There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.

  • Real friends are even closer than FAMILY
  • Strong families become stronger when they EXTEND themselves

FRESH START

(Psalm 68:6, NLT) GOD places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy.

3 things that Jesus’ Family provides:

  1. COMMUNITY
  2. FREEDOM
  3. JOY

NEXT Step: Make Jesus the CENTER of my family, and invite my friends into His FAMILY

“Before there was a church there was a family. But that doesn’t mean that every family is a strong family.”

AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

(Ephesians 4:2-3, NLT) Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART

(Acts 13:22, NLT) “GOD removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom GOD said, ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’”

10 characteristics that made David a man After GOD’s Own Heart:

1. HUMILITY (Psalm 62:9) 6. DEVOTION (Psalm 4:7)
2. REVERENCE (Psalm 18:3) 7. WORSHIP (Psalm 9:1)
3. RESPECT (Psalm 31:9) 8. FAITHFULNESS (Psalm 23:6)
4. TRUST (Psalm 27:1) 9. OBEDIENCE (Psalm 119:34)
5. LOVE (Psalm 18:1) 10. REPENTANCE (Psalm 25:11)

CHASING JESUS

  • David was called a man After GOD’s Own Heart because of his REPENTANCE
  • David recognized his own SIN, and didn’t try to HIDE IT
  • David was called a man After GOD’s Own Heart because he CHASED GOD

4 ways I chase Jesus:

1. TRUST Jesus more than myself

(Psalm 25:1-2, NLT) O LORD, I give my life to you. I trust in you, my GOD!

2. Let Jesus determine the PATH of my life

(Psalm 25:4, NLT) Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow.

3. MAGNIFY Jesus by humbly CONFESSING that I am a sinner

(Psalm 25:11, NLT) For the honor of your name, O LORD, forgive my many, many sins.

4. Make the CHOICE to place my hope in JESUS

(Psalm 25:21, NLT) May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you.

FRESH START

  1. Look to JESUS as the pattern for my ROMANTIC relationships
  2. Make Jesus the CENTER of my family, and invite my friends into His FAMILY
  3. Chase after JESUS and experience real INTIMACY in all my other relationships

“David was called a man after GOD’s Own heart not because he was sinless or perfect, but because he lived a repented life… he chased GOD.”
