Jesus: GOD’s Gift, Our Example

In this month’s series, Speaking of Jesus, we’re moving through the life of Jesus and learning the purpose and power behind each aspect of His time on Earth.  This week, we’re diving deeper into the servant heart of Jesus.

“Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different.  Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.  For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:42-45, NLT, emphasis added).

Throughout His three and a half years of ministry, Jesus preached the “upside-down” kingdom of GOD coming to Earth.  The last shall be first, lose your life to save it, the humble shall be lifted up, and all of the other paradoxes Jesus shared highlight that the Kingdom of GOD is led by its servants.  Leadership, then, is from the bottom-up, not from the top-down as we are so accustomed to in our modern Western culture.  Fortunately, GOD provides Jesus as the ultimate servant-leader, which is both a gift to us and an example for us.

Jesus: GOD’s Gift

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of GOD in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21, NKJV, emphasis added).

First and foremost, Jesus is our Gift from GOD.  Before we can even think about how to follow His example of servant hearted living, we must accept Him, His sacrifice, and His grace as something we can never earn or live up to.  We must open our hearts to His love and our minds to His new way of thinking.  We no longer live for ourselves, but we embrace the gift of GOD, and live out the reality of our salvation.  Only when we dive headfirst into our relationship with Jesus and recognize how unworthy, yet endlessly loved we are, can we turn and follow the example of Jesus as a servant-leader through the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.

Jesus: Our Example

“You have made him for a little while lower than the angels; You have crowned Him with glory and honor, And have appointed Him over the works of Your hands; You have put all things in subjection under His feet” (Hebrews 2:7-8, NASB, emphasis added).

Once we accept and embrace Jesus as the Gift of GOD and our Savior, we are then called to humbly submit ourselves to Him in service for His kingdom.  As He gave up His own life for us, so we in turn pour out our lives for His purpose and for those around us.  We follow His example, and in turn lead others to accept Him as GOD’s Gift.

Throughout His years of ministry, Jesus provides countless examples on how we are called to lovingly care for those around us.  He takes time out of his plans to engage with those in need, He heals those that are hurting, He mourns with those who mourn, He invests in relationships with the people on the margins of society, and through all of his interactions, He points everyone around Him to GOD.

In fact, Jesus sums up all of the law by essentially telling His followers to “Love GOD with absolutely everything you are,” and to “Love others as you love yourself.”  Jesus upheld these commandments lovingly and perfectly.  While we cannot ourselves attain perfection, this is the divine example that Jesus, GOD’s Gift has set for us, and through His power, will continue to lead us further into as we draw closer to Him.
