Why Was Jesus Born?

In this month’s series, Speaking of Jesus, we’re moving through the life of Jesus and learning the purpose and power behind each aspect of his time on Earth.  This week, we’re diving deeper into why Jesus was born.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, NLT).

For those of us that have heard this verse referenced with regularity, it may help to dissect the individual ideas and how they relate Jesus’ purpose and identity.

The Way: Jesus was born to provide a Pathway to GOD.

When he says He is “the way,” we can understand this as the pathway of redemption.  In other words, Jesus is means of salvation and returning to the LORD.

Without the life of Christ, our sins would continue to separate us from GOD.  No religion that man creates can reconnect us to Our Creator.  These man-made religions only give us a false sense of accomplishment, as if we could earn our way back to the LORD.  Only a relationship with Him, through Jesus, allows us to be forgiven and made a new creation and restored to a right relationship with GOD.  This is how Jesus saves us, by becoming the pathway to the Father.

The Truth:  Jesus Came to Save the Lost

“The Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost” (Luke 19:10, NLT).

Jesus was not born only to be a pathway or a bridge to the divine.  He is not the means to an end, for He is the means and the end together.  And not only did He live to act as a conduit, but He came to be a Shepard and to lead us back to GOD.  In this sense, Jesus was born to be “the truth” that saves us when we lose our way apart from the LORD.

Jesus came to save us with the truth. Or rather, Jesus saves us living as the truth.  He counters and overcomes the lies that we are fed by Satan and by the pagan gods that have influenced society.  He speaks to us of our eternal value, His unending love for us, and His grace that surpasses all of our misgivings.  The truth Jesus speaks and lives out save us from our sins when we let him lead us back to the life He provides.

The Life:  Jesus Came to Give Us Life

“My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10b).

Not only does Jesus reconnect us to GOD and save us when we wander away from the design and purpose of our lives, He provides the enormous blessing of a fulfilled life in Him.

Once Jesus saves us and leads us away from our own wanderings and misguided ways, He gently guides us to the green pastures of a fruitful and fulfilling life with and for Him.

Let us be clear here – Jesus does not promise riches or satisfaction in a worldly sense.  He is very upfront with His disciples that there will be hardship and struggles on the pathway that He provides.  He does, however, promise the power of His presence in our lives, the joy of knowing His intimately, and the satisfaction of an eternal treasure that we can never truly know the value of in this life.

So why was Jesus born?  Jesus was born to be the way, truth, and life we needed to be reconnected to GOD, to be saved from the lies that we believe, and to live a truly fulfilling life in Him.
